Yahoo Mail has been experiencing issues since late yesterday afternoon. The outage is concentrated on Android and iPhone apps, which are not loading, leaving thousands of people unable to send or receive email.
The glitch has been fixed, Yahoo reassured frustrated email users, though it admitted it could take up to 24 hours for the patch to take effect for everyone. Meanwhile, thousands are still unable to check their email using the Yahoo Mail app on iOS and Android.
“Something went wrong with Yahoo Mail,” warns a pop-up message when trying to launch the Yahoo Mail app on Android, “Yahoo Mail is closed because this app has an error.”
To address the ongoing issue, Yahoo has issued an emergency advisory to all users with five easy-to-follow steps that it claims will fix everything. Step by step guide X was first publishedformerly Twitter.
For those who rely on the Yahoo Mail app on Android devices:
- Long press the application icon
- Click the information icon in the upper right corner to open the application settings
- Scroll down to the usage section and the storage row and open them
- Clear cache and data
- Open the app again and it should work as usual
Or, if you’re using Yahoo Mail with the iPhone app:
- Close all existing Yahoo app sessions
- Open the Settings app on your iOS device
- Look for the Yahoo app and click on it
- Scrolling to the bottom, you should see a toggle button called “Cancel All Accounts”
- Turn on the button and restart the application. (You may be asked to sign in again)

Yahoo also told users that deleting and reinstalling the Yahoo Mail app from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store may also help resolve the issue.
It’s not clear what exactly caused the problem with the Yahoo Mail app. Logging into the email service on a laptop or desktop using a web browser was not affected by the outage, as only those relying on the mobile app on Android and iOS experienced problems checking their inbox in the last 18 hours.
According to an independent website Fall detectorwhich tracks outages using mentions in public social media posts, tracked more than 8,500 reports from frustrated users in the UK at the height of the problem.
Despite the team at Yahoo identifying the problem and issuing a fix, there are still more than 2,000 reports today. Using location data embedded in social media posts, Down Detector can produce heat map showing the highest concentration of reports across the UK.
London and Birmingham are the cities with the highest number of reports, with Cardiff and Manchester following in third and fourth place.

A Yahoo Mail spokesperson admitted that it could be a while before everything is back up and running with the popular email service. IN tweetthe company acknowledged: “Thank you for your patience while we worked to resolve issues with our apps today. The fix is here, but it may take up to 24 hours to arrive on your device.
“For a faster solution, you can uninstall and reinstall your app. Please note: We recommend that you do not uninstall your app unless you know your login credentials (password, etc.) or your recovery channels are up-to-date, as you will have to to log in again after reinstallation.”
