TIER IV collaborates with Arma on new automotive technologies

TOKYO, March 13, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — LEVEL IVa pioneer in open source autonomous driving (AD) technology, is excited to partner with Handa leader in semiconductor and software design, as a key AD partner for end applications.

A group of industry leaders, including TIER IV and Autoware Foundation (AWF), have partnered with Arma to launch new virtual platforms and software solutions based on the state-of-the-art Arma® Automotive Enhanced (AE) technologies. This partnership aims to address the growing need to shorten hardware and software development cycles in the age of software-defined vehicles (SDV).

In this strategic partnership, TIER IV integrates its state-of-the-art DevOps (development and operations) and MLOps (machine learning operations) platform for autonomous driving in the cloud, Web.Autowith virtual models of Arm processors running in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud on Arm-based instances.

Web.Auto embodies a robust suite of development platform tools, including AD simulators, enabling verification of perception, localization, planning and control functions, as well as CI/CD (continuous integration and continuous delivery) data pipeline. The TIER IV connection with Arma is focused on the development side of the Web.Auto platform. On the operational front, Web.Auto boasts fleet management and remote monitoring systems. The combined capabilities of these platform tools enable efficient development and secure operation of AD systems.

This collaboration builds on the momentum from CES 2024 Autoware* Open the AD set demonstration by AWF, eSync alliance and SOAFEEwith the participation of other key players in the industry including TIER IV, Arm, AWS, Excelfor, Leo Drive and red hat. The demonstration showcased Web.Auto’s capabilities in validating Open AD Kit Planning containers, highlighting the platform’s potential in AD technology development.

TIER IV and Arm aim to drive a “left shift” revolution for hardware and chip development tailored to future AD applications, creating a seamless environment and system-level parity between cloud and edge automotive platforms. This effort empowers industry stakeholders, including automakers, Tier 1 suppliers and chip makers, to leverage the potential of the cloud-native Web.Auto platform to make key hardware and IP (intellectual property) decisions and meet autonomy requirements before investing in physical hardware or waiting for its availability.

Currently, TIER IV is leading the effort to implement AD systems worldwide Japantowards the Japanese government’s goal of establishing driverless services in more than 50 locations by 2025 and in more than 100 locations by 2027.

“The goal of our collaboration with Arma is to give automakers and chipmakers the tools they need to design the necessary hardware that will be critical to the global scaling of autonomous driving,” he said. Shinpei Kato, founder, executive director and technical director of TIER IV. “Virtual prototyping can be a game-changer, accelerating the path from AD proof-of-concept tests to widespread commercial deployments.”

“Vehicle electronics are becoming increasingly complex due to growing needs for artificial intelligence and software, so a fundamental rethinking of product development is needed for automakers to achieve faster time-to-market,” he said. Suraj Gajendra, Vice President of Products and Solutions, Automotive Line of Business, Arm. “Partnering with industry leaders like TIER IV enables us to develop autonomous driving built on our cutting-edge Automotive Enhanced technology faster and more agilely, accelerating development cycles and driving faster innovation across the industry.”
