The built-in Weather app on your iPhone works perfectly. In fact, I feel like it’s getting more accurate with age. But all too often I find that his forecasts aren’t perfect – especially when it comes to rain – and the experience isn’t always the most intuitive either. Especially when looking ahead, it can be difficult to move quickly between different locations and while on the go.
There are many weather apps that can give you a better-to-use and better-looking experience, but it’s not always easy to find a good-looking weather app and it works without being bombarded with meteorological information. Who would have thought that wanting to know if tomorrow will be sunny or not would be such a difficult task, right?
Well, I’ve just spent the past few weeks traveling in Spain and I’ve really enjoyed using the Mercury Weather app. In many ways, the Mercury Weather app isn’t that unique. It looks and behaves like most other weather apps, but for me everything about Mercury Weather is a little simpler, a little more refined and a little more enjoyable than its rivals.
Why Mercury Weather is my new favorite weather app
The app looks nice, with an ombre effect in the background of the main dashboard. You’ll then see a detailed weather report for your current location, but not with all kinds of information you won’t need, just key temperature stats, how the temperature feels, the hourly forecast for the next 24 hours and the forecast for the next week, too.
Scroll down and you’ll see information on the UV index, cloud cover, humidity levels, wind and expected rain. If you enjoy watching the sunrise and sunset every day, like me (clouds permitting), you’ll also find that information here.
Tap the little magnifying glass in the top right corner of the screen and you can search for locations and see a list of the ones you’ve recently searched for. You can also set a home location within the app — it’s automatically added to your list of locations while you’re traveling, but then hidden when you return home.
As someone who spends a lot of time traveling, I also like that within the premium version of the app you can save weather data for an unlimited number of locations, and there’s a feature called Travel Forecast. This allows you to add all your upcoming trips and travel plans so you can see what the weather will be like – a great way to motivate you if you live in a country where the weather is bad and want to count down the days until you’re in the sun.
Otherwise, you don’t need the premium version of Mercury Weather to enjoy the basics. But if you were willing to pay the $14.99/£14.99 subscription, you’ll also get access to lock screen widgets, which show you details of your current location without even having to unlock your phone.
Weather geeks will also love that the premium version unlocks historical weather data for any location, ideal if you want to plan your next trip.
Mercury Weather looks nice, is easy to use and provides only the most important information. It was very handy when I was traveling, but now I also consider it a daily essential app.
