Google released a reading mode app back in 2020, and with the latest update, the company has made the app much more useful. The app now works on Gmail, Threads and X. It also works with other social media and email apps.
Since Google killed the Assistant’s “Read Aloud” feature a few weeks ago, I switched to their Reading Mode app and have been very happy with it. It’s even better than Assistant.
Swipe up from the bottom with two fingers to activate it instantly. Brilliant.

For those who don’t know, Reading Mode turns every page you look at into plain text, making reading much easier and distraction-free. So a reading mode that supports Gmail and social media apps is a big step in the right direction.
However, the developers note that the app may not work well with all social media and email apps, but it will probably get the job done. Plus, the app can read it out loud, if you’re on the go and listening is a better option.
