Sunbird beta (iMessage for Android) will restart, getting a second chance with security fixes
Through a press statement published on its website, Sunbird revealed its desire to reintroduce iMessage for Android. After a barrage of criticism, the service was ironically discontinued. And massive security lapses marred its initial phase.
Sunbird debuted in early 2022 as a way for Android users to experience iMessage functionality on their devices. However, it had a few setbacks when people discovered some flaws within its system like publicly available shared media and real-time messaging among others. After this happened, the service stopped working forever.
The press release states that Sunbird is returning to the market with a greater focus on privacy and security measures. The company has made significant changes to its systems such as replacing the older architecture with an AV2 architecture that focuses on secure messaging protocols.
According to Sunbird, this new architecture uses an MQTTS message broker that complies with OASIS standards for secure messaging. Additionally, the app will also integrate with RCS via Google Messages just like it did during their previous version under the Nothing Chats brand.
The company is changing its staff by reorienting its attitude towards security
Sunbird has made changes within its organization to strengthen its stance on safety. The company hired CIPHER, an independent cybersecurity consulting firm, with Jared Jordan, who was Google’s former director of engineering for Gmail, as one of its official advisors.
While admitting that there have indeed been security breaches over the years that have led to a loss of customer faith, Sunbird has decided to focus on providing security and openness as it relaunches its services. The company’s efforts to fix its flaws and tighten security show that Sunbird wants to provide secure messaging systems for its users.
