Keeper Security Announces Access Key Support on Mobile Devices

Keeper® provides leading secure management and cross-platform functionality for access keys and traditional passwords.

CHICAGO, April 2, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Security guard, a leading provider of zero-trust, zero-knowledge cloud-based cybersecurity software that protects passwords, secrets, connections and privileged access, today announces support for access key management on iOS and Android mobile devices. With Keeper, passwords are created, stored and managed in the Keeper Vault, and can be used to easily log into websites and applications across all browsers and operating systems. As long as you have access to your Keeper Vault, you have access to your access keys, whether on desktop or mobile.

“Keeper is leading the way toward a secure, password-free future by further expanding our password support,” he said Craig Lurey, CTO and co-founder of Keeper Security. “As this exciting new method of authentication gains popularity, we understand that users need a platform that provides secure management of multiple login methods – including access keys and traditional passwords. In this hybrid world, Keeper provides a seamless experience across all operating systems and devices.”

A password is a cryptographic key that allows users to sign in to accounts and apps without entering a password – similar to a digital version of a key card stored on a phone, tablet or computer. Passcode uses biometric data on your device, such as your fingerprint or facial recognition, allowing you to sign in to supported apps and accounts the same way you unlock your phone or tablet with your fingerprint or face.

IN June 2023, Keeper announced support for access keys in its browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave and Safari. Keeper stores and automatically fills in the access key, similar to password-based login. Keeper Vault provides access key management, including the ability to securely share them between family members and business teams.

Major browsers and platforms have begun to include password support in their operating systems, leaving the responsibility of website and app developers to build password support into their login flows. Because passwords only work on websites and platforms that support them, Keeper created Password directory to provide users with a current list of places where they can be used.

To create and save an access key, users will visit the “Security” or “Account Settings” screen on the website that supports the access key. When clicking on “Create a Password”, the user will be asked if they want to save the access key to their Keeper Vault. This video demonstration shows how easy it is to do. The next time a user visits that website, they can use an access key stored securely in their Keeper Vault and protected by no-knowledge encryption, to log in from any device. This is a key advantage, because otherwise access keys can only be used with the device they were created on. A password record in a user’s Keeper Vault contains the date the password was created, the username, and the website or application where it was created. Password records can be managed in the vault like any other record, including placing them in folders or sharing them with other users.

Passwords are easier to use than many traditional authentication methods and are resistant to identity theft, allowing users to log in to supported websites more seamlessly and more securely. The password-free technology, first introduced in 2022, is built on industry standards from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the FIDO Alliance, and is supported by Apple, Google, Microsoft, Paypal, eBay and others.
