After experimenting with Gemini integration in Google Workspace, Google appears to be testing AI-generated replies in the Gmail app for Android. Earlier this year, Google announced that it was making AI-based features available to Google One AI Premium subscribers in beta. Now a new implementation of Gemini has appeared in the Gmail app, offering three suggested replies from Gemini for each of your emails.
Android expert at AssembleDebug managed to enable the feature in the Gmail app and shared the findings with PiunikaWeb. Google calls this tool “reply suggestions from Gemini,” a feature that works after some developer flags are turned on in Gmail. Once enabled, Gemini can analyze the content of an email received by a Gmail user and provide three suggested responses that make sense in context. In some cases, these AI-generated Gemini responses can be as long as a full sentence or two.

You can act on the suggestions by tapping one of the AI-generated options, which will move its content into the text box. You can then press the submit button to complete your response. However, you may want to edit the message or add more, possibly after Gemini’s suggested answer is moved to the writing field.
Gemini has already appeared in Gmail, but in a different way. Google One AI Premium subscribers can get help creating emails with Gemini, although this feature is in beta. Help me write in Workspace Labs is another way users can use AI to write messages in Gmail. Compared to these two options, “Gemini answer suggestions” have a completely different purpose. These suggestions are for quick, pre-written replies that can be sent in just two taps in the Gmail app for Android.
Like many Gemini implementations, Google wants your feedback when using its AI tools. In some cases, Google will show “bad suggestions?” action item below suggested Gemini answers. Tapping on that text will give you the chance to notify Google when AI-generated responses on Gmail miss the mark.
Although suggested answers from Gemini are now available after manually enabling development tags, we don’t know when they might be made public.
