Google has released the first beta version of the upcoming operating system (OS) Android 15 for public testing. The update is only available to select Google Pixel users who have signed up for the Android Beta program.
In an update to Google’s Android blog page, the company confirmed that the Android 15 Beta is now available and offers eligible users “to test new features for our next unreleased platform, which is still in active development.”
This is the first consumer release for the Android 15 OS. However, Google has already released two development previews for the OS. In the preview, Google detailed the new features it plans to bring with the upcoming system update. Here’s a look at everything new coming to Android smartphones:
Android 15: Satellite support
With Android 15, Google will expand support for satellite connectivity. In another development preview for the upcoming system update, Google showed how apps on Android 15 will be able to detect when a device is connected to a satellite. In addition, SMS/MMS applications and applications using RCS messages will be able to send and receive messages via satellite connection, without using mobile or Wi-Fi networks.

Android 15: Easier touch payment experience
With Android 15, apps on supported smartphones will be able to make a Near Field Communication (NFC) request to the device’s adapter to enter “Watch” mode. This means that the device will be able to connect, but will not respond to NFC readers. This will allow applications to authenticate before first communicating with an NFC reader.

Google is planning to introduce one of the biggest privacy features for Android devices with the next operating system. Google said that apps on Android 15 will gain the ability to detect whenever it’s visible to a screen recorder. With this, if an application is performing a sensitive operation, it can notify the user that the process is being recorded.
Android 15: Cover screen support
Google is expected to improve the Android experience on flip smartphones. With Android 15, developers will be able to declare that their app or activity can be displayed on the cover screen of the foldable device. Although Google said that “screens are too small to be considered compatible targets for running Android apps,” a developer can still opt to have their app available on the home screen.
Android 15: in-app camera controls
In Android 15, Google will likely add new extensions for more control over the camera hardware. Additionally, the company would allow developers to adjust the brightness level of the camera preview with low-light enhancements within their apps. Developers can also get controls to adjust the intensity of the flash in single and flash mode.
Android 15: performance control
For performance-demanding apps and games on Android 15, Google is adding a new power-saving mode. This mode will let developers know if a particular line of code should prioritize power savings over performance. It is said to improve the overall app experience and allow for better management of the background workload.
Other notable features include a feature that would let developers know if their program will cause the device to overheat and cause performance degradation.
