Gmail for Android prepares Gemini email summaries

Gemini has already begun to be integrated into Gmail for the web and other Google Workspace applications. There are obvious signs that the Google Gemini email digest feature could be coming to Gmail on Android.

In Gmail for the web, some users can experience Google Workspace Labs integration, which pulls Gemini’s AI functionality into the email website. One way Gemini can work is with the email summary feature.

Essentially, Gemini can create a digest of email threads and content so you don’t have to dig through messages. It may prove to be quite useful, but it is still in the early stages of development.

According to PiunikaWeb, the email summary feature may also be coming to Gmail for Android. An email digest tool has been discovered hidden in an upcoming version of the app. It comes as a button just below the email subject, labeled “Summarize this email.” Tapping it would likely generate a summary at the bottom of the email, similar to the web version.

The tool isn’t working at this infantile stage, but it does show Google’s plans to bring Gemini to the Gmail mobile app instead of just rolling it out on the web, which was unlikely. One could also argue that the feature would be even more useful in a mobile environment than on a desktop computer, where text and formatting are easier to discern.

Since this is a feature that shows signs that it’s still in the works, Google hasn’t mentioned when Android users can expect to see Gemini-powered email summaries on Gmail. It’s also unknown if the email summary feature from Gemini on mobile will be as limited as the current web version.
