Dyson unveils iPhone app to make sure you NEVER miss a spot

Dyson has announced a new smartphone app that shows you exactly where you cleaned in real time. This smart Augmented Reality (AR) tool should reduce the number of missed spots to zero. It also means you’ll never go over the same spot twice, so you’ll only spend as much time as necessary cleaning the floors.

Called Dyson CleanTrace, the handy smartphone app will work with any Dyson Gen5 Detect cordless vacuum, which was first announced in October 2022. The Gen5 Detect was the first to equip a laser on a motorized roller head to illuminate tiny dust particles that are invisible to the naked eye — so you can be sure that you have thoroughly cleaned every surface.

Dyson recently has announced a new Submarine accessory for its cordless vacuum cleaners which uses a pressurized water jet to mop the floor. A second tank collects leftover liquid, leaving your floors dry. Dyson says using pressurized water means you’ll be able to cover 110m2 without stopping to refill the tank.

The incoming Dyson CleanTrace app uses several different technologies to visualize the exact path you’ve already taken with your vacuum cleaner.

For one thing, it relies primarily on LiDAR — a depth-sensing system originally developed by NASA and used to create a bokeh-style blur behind the subject in portrait mode photos — to map your room.

As such, it will not be compatible with all devices, as LiDAR is only available on a few models, primarily from Apple. Dyson has not confirmed the exact models that will be compatible with CleanTrace when it launches.

There’s a dedicated phone holder for your vacuum, so you can see the screen while pushing the vacuum around the room. On the screen, the app will overlay your cleaning paths using AR, showing you where you cleaned and what you missed.

When you’re done vacuuming, you can scan the room with your phone to identify gaps so you never miss a spot. Existing technology inside the Dyson Gen5 Detect senses and counts dust particles, showing evidence of deep cleaning.

The Dyson CleanTrace app was developed after Dyson research found that its users regularly overestimate the amount of time they spend cleaning – its data shows that around 80% of cleaning sessions last less than 10 minutes, yet people claim to vacuum for an average of 24 minutes. minutes per session. What’s more, most people are pretty haphazard and inefficient, regularly covering the same areas multiple times and missing other places entirely, which is what led the engineers to start putting together what would become CleanTrace.

Speaking about the new launch, VP of Engineering for Dyson Home, Charlie Park, said: “We realized we could all learn something from a methodical approach to cleaning our robot vacuums.

“Unlike most human cleaners, Dyson robots know where they are in the room, where they’ve been and where they need to go. With Dyson CleanTrace, we’re adding this extra layer of cleaning intelligence to the Gen 5 Detect vacuum cleaner. It gives you the ability to see where you’ve cleaned, and where you are not, which combined with our built-in particle detection technology provides proof that the floor is indeed clean.”

The Dyson CleanTrace will be available sometime in June 2024, we’ll share the exact date as soon as we know more. Meanwhile, the compatible Gen 5 Detect vacuum cleaner is now available in the UK, with prices starting at £849.99.

THE LATEST DEVELOPMENT

It’s been a busy few months for the British brand that announced the first major redesign of its award-winning Supersonic hair dryer since its launch eight years ago. The new Supersonic Nural can intelligently change heat and airflow settings as soon as you plug in the accessory and will automatically turn off when you put it away.
