The dilution coolers that are vital for cooling quantum computers and other quantum technologies have evolved significantly over the past few years, and now a significant step has been taken in improving the control capabilities of these systems.

The gas handling system is the heart that drives every Bluefors dilution cooler, managing the circulation of helium gas through the system. At the APS meeting in March this year, the company launched the Generation 2 Gas Handling System driven by powerful new management software.

The control software update started with imagining what the user should be able to achieve with a dilution cooler. Bluefors wanted to provide users with a more intuitive experience that gives them full control over all device parameters, but also makes key tasks much simpler.

The new software offers intelligent automation, so the entire cooling can be started with just a few clicks, but it’s also powerful enough that experienced users can dive deep into all the data and diagnostics they need. A completely redesigned user interface provides a clear display of the refrigerator’s status during cooling.

Using a touch screen user interface, users can intuitively access a huge set of device parameters, detect errors and issue warnings, use an internal database and enjoy increased automation to free up more time for experimentation.

Based on the system’s live dashboard, users can now see an updated overview of the cryostat, its current operating status, temperature history and any alerts. The fully configurable Data Viewer allows you to monitor multiple sensors and data points.

The enhanced system overview displays live system data, allowing individual one-touch management of valve states and key functions. An extensive list of devices provides enhanced data for each meter, pump, controller or other device.

Improved remote access means you can access your system via a browser, with magnet remote control offered for the first time.

The new management software is also designed to identify any potential issues, and a maintenance review helps customers keep everything up and running, providing more peace of mind and helping to maintain the long system life the company is known for.

Promising to facilitate the development of future quantum technologies, the new gas handling system and control software work in tandem as an easily upgradeable modular platform that gives users the next level of control and functionality for years to come.
