BlackBerry Limited BB and ETAS GmbH have signed an agreement to sell and market software solutions that accelerate the development of safety-critical functions for the next generation of software-defined vehicles (SDVs).
The collaboration builds on their long-standing technical partnership and will offer pre-integrated software using the ETAS RTA-VRTE middleware and QNX operating system. These solutions provide a high-performance and secure foundation for the development of microprocessor-based vehicle computer/domain controller electronic control units (ECUs).
Additionally, the solution includes ETAS’ automotive firewall and intrusion detection technology to provide continuous security monitoring and conform to industry standards. The solution addresses the transition of the automotive industry to SDV and the increasing demand for reliable software and the AUTOSAR Adaptive standard.

Headquartered in Waterloo, Canada, BB provides intelligent security software and services to businesses and governments worldwide. It offers devices and software platforms to manage security, mobility and communication between hardware, mobile applications and the Internet of Things.
In March, the company recently expanded its alliance with TTTech Auto to address the critical challenges that increasingly present complexities in SDV’s progress. The partnership is likely to ease the native integration of the latest QNX operating system 8.0 with TTTech Auto’s cutting-edge planning solutions in a certain safety-certified product.
The expanded partnership is likely to improve performance and enable optimization of core semiconductors in critical environments such as advanced driver assistance systems for SDV. Additionally, it will extend the scalability of architectures from zone to domain controllers and central computing, while enabling fail-safe solutions.
The collaboration is likely to benefit BB due to the growing adoption of automotive operating systems and safety solutions in SDVs. The initiative is likely to place the company at the forefront of the software industry with increased market share and growth at the top.
BB currently has a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). The stock lost 29% last year compared to the sub-industry’s 42.3% gain.
