Based on Blackbaud’s suite of robust philanthropic data, the Blackbaud Institute shares new insights on last year’s giving trends and what fundraisers should know for 2024.
CHARLESTON, SC, April 8, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Blackbaud Institute, a research laboratory in the Blackbaud (NASDAQ: BLKB), a leading provider of social impact software, today announced new insights from Blackbaud’s unparalleled philanthropy data set in its Trends in giving attention in 2023.
The Blackbaud Institute provides data for social impact professionals to understand broader industry trends, measure success and take fundraising to the next level. This new series of quarterly reviews will draw on Blackbaud’s data and insights into philanthropy, nonprofit business operations, corporate social responsibility and more. Current Focus provides an overview of the charitable giving trends that defined 2023 and a look at the past five years, with advice on how organizations can make the most of this year.
“Looking back at last year in fundraising, the trend that jumps out is stability,” he said Carrie Cobb, Chief Data Officer, Blackbaud. “2023 can be seen as the bookend to a historic five-year charitable giving story, with generosity remaining durable and today’s giving levels well above pre-pandemic norms.”
Key findings:
- Giving remains resilient.
- For average year-over-year changes normalized at the organization level, the five-year compound annual growth rate of 1.79% illustrates the solid upward trend being felt across the nonprofit sector, with giving at the average organization remaining well above pre-pandemic levels.
- Online Giving continues to grow.
- The percentage of charitable donations donated through online sources grew from nearly 8% in 2022 to over 12% for the average organization in 2023.
- This increase was felt in all sizes of organizations and sub-sectors, but small organizations (income below 1 million dollars) lead the pack with nearly 17% of an organization’s average donations coming from online sources, with online donations overall increasing by 1.5% for the average organization.
- Environmental causes — a favorite of millennials and Gen Z — had a strong year in 2023.
- The three subsectors where the average organization saw the largest increase in charitable giving in 2023 were: environmental organizations (+3.8%), animal welfare organizations (+1.4%), and medical research (+1.3%) ).
- These are also top reasons for Millennials and Gen Z. As the percentage of giving from online sources grows, optimizing online donation forms will make it easier for Millennials and Gen Z to give. Gen Z donors report using an organization’s website to donate at nearly twice the rate of the one assumed by fundraising experts.
