iOS 18 may have a big focus on AI when it arrives later this year, but Apple will still want to make some updates to existing iPhone apps. And that could mean a big change for the built-in Maps tool, if some recently leaked code is any indication.
According to a report by MacRumors code researcher Nicolás Alvarez, he came across code that references custom routes coming to iOS 18 Maps. Apparently, Apple pushed an iOS 18 file into its map background labeled “CustomRouteCreation.” The file doesn’t reveal anything other than its name, but it does mention that the upcoming feature will initially only be available in the United States, which is pretty typical of new Maps features.
When planning a trip in Apple Maps, your current options are quite limited. It is possible to add certain restrictions when planning a trip, such as the prohibition of motorways or tolls. A comparison of Apple Maps and Google Maps reveals that these options pale in comparison to what you can find in other map apps. In particular, Google Maps allows the user much more freedom when planning a route.
The appeal of custom itineraries is the freedom it offers users when planning their trip, and it can make the experience much more enjoyable. For example, it would allow the user to choose a particular road for its visual beauty, unlike the current approach which focuses on expediency.
We’ve heard plenty of rumors about what could be announced when Apple unveils iOS 18 at WWDC 2024, with a particular focus on Apple’s AI plans. We’re glad to hear that other features in Apple’s built-in apps haven’t been overlooked in this attempt at artificial intelligence.
On the other hand, we’re only talking about a line of code that doesn’t give us much information to work with. We won’t know how “CustomRouteCreation” will work or if it will even be included until WWDC, which is confirmed for June 10th.
