Improvements in protection against stolen devices
iOS 17.4 brings improved protection against device theft. Users can now specify security delays before changing settings, even when in known locations. This prevents thieves from quickly disabling tracking or wiping the device.
Improved security for iMessage
The iOS 17.4 update includes an advanced security feature for iMessage that uses impenetrable encryption against quantum computers. Quantum computing, a new type of processing, has the potential to break conventional encryption. But now, with PQ3 encryption, texts and media sent and received via iMessage are protected.
Big changes to the App Store for users in Europe
Probably the most significant change is a complete remodel Application store for users in European Union. This redesign aims to comply with new antitrust regulations under the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Some notable changes include allowing third-party app stores, sideloading apps, alternative in-app purchase systems, and more browser options outside of WebKit. This will fundamentally change the closed ecosystem of iOS and give users more choice and control.
While it is limited to the EU region iPhone devices for now, the impact of these changes could spread more widely depending on their reception. This represents Apple’s biggest concession yet to loosen its grip on iOS.
A more personalized welcome screen
The redesigned personalized welcome screen when restarting iOS aims to add satisfaction and extra customization. With the user’s profile picture and fun bubble animation, it refreshes the user experience and makes the iPhone more unique in itself.
Adjusting the battery status
Apple has made some changes to the “Battery” menu in the Settings app. The changes make it easier for users to determine if their iPhone’s battery health is “normal.” Additionally, Apple announced that the iPhone 15’s batteries are performing better than originally expected.
Transcripts are coming to Podcasts
In a long-awaited move, Apple is bringing transcriptions to its flagship Podcasts app. Just like song lyrics in Music, transcripts allow you to search within episodes, jump to specific parts, and follow the lyrics as you listen.
Other changes in iOS 17.4
In addition to these headline items, iOS 17.4 brings tweaks throughout the interface. Among the six new emojis, there are new emojis such as a waving brown head, a mushroom, a lime, and a phoenix bird. And CarPlay should work better on dual-screen car displays.
While some things come new, some also pass away. In the EU, web apps will no longer be supported on iOS, as Apple makes changes ahead of the Digital Markets Act.
While the sweeping changes to the App Store may be the most talked about feature of iOS 17.4, Apple has also made significant efforts to improve the overall user experience with this release. The update aims to provide iPhone users with a sense of freshness, security and personalization that will last until 2024. We’ll have a better idea of how successful these changes are when the public unveiling happens next month.
