Audiomojis are coming to your Android phone

Abstract

• Google is working on Audiomoji sound reactions for phone calls, according to a beta version of the Phone app.
• A total of six sound effects will be available, including Sad and Applause, and each sound also comes with its own animation.
• Google has reportedly been working on Audiomoji for the Phone app since last September.

Google Messages has picked up a ton of features over the past few months, and Google announced a few in December to mark the app’s one billion RCS users. Separately, the messaging app has seen a handful of visual additions in the recent past, including animated emoji reactions. Now it seems Google wants to extend similar reactions to its Phone app by offering more sound effects during phone calls.

The code that refers to this special feature that Google supposedly calls audiomojiit was found inside the Google Phone app version 124 (beta), according to Code Detective AssembleDebug writing for TheSpAndroid. The German site SmartDroid.de was the first to report this development, also in collaboration with AssembleDebug.

Back to this feature, it’s basically audio-based reactions that you can add between phone calls. There are a total of six to choose from. AssembleDebug was able to extract the appropriate sounds from the Google Phone app code, which you can try by downloading the Ogg files below:

In addition, AssembleDebug says that each of these Audiomoji comes with a corresponding animation, which can be displayed on the screen along with the sound effects. However, only one of these animations was available, with the source extracting the drum animation graphics from the Phone app code.

It is currently unknown how these Audiomoji will be enabled within the Phone app. AssembleDebug speculates that Google could probably limit this functionality to the Call Screen feature or simply make it available on the phone call screen. It will be interesting to see if the corresponding sound effect animation also reaches the caller on the other end.

AssembleDebug notes that Audiomojis may have been in development since September of last year, then known as sound reactions, and Google will apparently remove the flags and strings related to the feature later. But it seems that the company has not given up on it and plans to revive it under the nickname Audiomoji.

The Google Phone app doesn’t usually get a lot of updates, unlike some of the company’s other apps. However, this new inclusion has the potential to be one of the biggest in recent memory, although we may have to wait a while since Audiomojis have only appeared in beta so far.
