Abstract
- The new “Summarize this email” button in Gmail for Android should allow for quick synopses of emails, similar to the web version.
- In short, this email is still in development for Android, so it may take some time before it arrives in the Gmail app.
- Meanwhile, Gmail’s three-dot menu could get a dedicated Gemini button for summaries and other actions.
Google Gemini has many tricks up its sleeve. Although its image-generating credentials have taken a significant hit following the recent controversy, Gemini continues to thrive and expand on other Google services, particularly the Workspace apps. We recently learned about the reply suggestion feature powered by Gemini in Gmail for Android. Another AI-based attribute is now in the works for Gmail for Android, as a prominent Google app leaker has revealed.
20 years of Gmail: How it is from April Fools’ Day to email dominance
Let’s circle back and take a nostalgic trip down email memory lane
A little digging in the latest Gmail application (version 2024.03.31.621006929) by AssembleDebug (via PiunikaWeb) discovered a Summarize this email button, designed to give users a quick synopsis of longer emails or long threads. This feature already exists in the web version of Gmail, so its arrival on the Android app is not particularly surprising.
As you can see above, Summarize this email button appears just below the email title/subject. But since this feature is still in the early stages of email, tapping this button supposedly doesn’t do anything. But it’s safe to assume that the experience will be similar to the email digest feature in the web version of Gmail. People with access to Gemini for Google Workspace on the web can tap Ask Gemini button (flashing icon) inside an email conversation, which opens a sidebar with suggestions for next action, such as “what is this email about?” among others.
4 ways to use Gemini Advanced with Google Workspace
Gemini Advanced offers some compelling integrations within Google Workspace apps
As PiunikaWeb predicts, the feature’s behavior on Gmail’s mobile apps could be different, potentially appearing as a panel or popup containing an email summary. We assume this feature will be limited to people with paid Google One plans, such as the AI Premium tier.
On top of this new one Summarize this email button in Gmail for Android, AssembleDebug also discovered a dedicated option for Gemini within the three-dot menu within the email thread. However, tapping the button instantly returns an empty panel.
We assume this panel would provide easy access to Google’s AI chatbot and other Gemini-related actions, such as the email digests feature mentioned above. While these updates aren’t live yet, they give us a decent idea of the AI-related changes coming to one of Google’s most used services.
