Grammarly is a tool that helps you improve your writing. It uses AI features to suggest changes in punctuation, spelling and word choice. When I’m writing on my MacBook, I sometimes use Grammarly to proofread articles before sending them to my editor—especially if it’s late in the day and my manual proofreading ability starts to wane.
But I just started using the Grammarly: AI Writing Keyboard app on my iPhone, and I think it might be just as useful for correcting spelling, suggesting synonyms, and acting as a smart transcription tool when I’m working on that smaller screen.
How Grammarly: AI Writing Keyboard words in the app
Grammarly: AI Writing Keyboard is a separate app for iPhone and iPad that you’ll need to download and then activate in your device’s keyboard settings. But once you add it, you’ll be able to choose it as your keyboard of choice when using your core apps, like Gmail and Instagram.
The app brings you a whole host of AI features designed to improve your writing. Some of my favorites are the revision mode, which you access by highlighting a piece of text and then choosing from a bunch of actions, like “make it assertive” or simply “improve.”
There’s also a voice composer, which you activate by pressing the little glittery microphone on top of the keyboard. This activates your device’s microphone and allows you to turn any random thoughts and casual speech into much more polished text. This is ideal if you like to think out loud. You can also expect some simpler (but equally practical) tools, such as a spelling and grammar checker and synonym suggestions.
If you regularly use your phone to write, whether it’s email, captions for social media, or dictating into the Voice Memos app, I’d highly recommend Grammarly: AI Writing Keyboard to make sure your words are always in tip-top shape. As with all AI tools these days, remember to take any suggestions with a grain of salt. Most of them are excellent, while others lag a little behind when it comes to interpreting the correct context.
