X (formerly Twitter) is about to release some big updates to its platform, especially in the “Communities” section, which is similar to a subreddit-style grouping. These adjustments coincide with rumors that Elon Musk, who now owns the company, is trying to enable NSFW (Not Safe For Work) groups.
Dong Wook Chung, an engineer at Xu, confirmed the information in a recent article. According to Chung, the app’s community function will soon automatically filter out offensive information. Furthermore, administrators will soon be able to bypass the automatic review procedure by using the settings to flag sites that contain “adult content”.

Researchers spotted indications prior to this confirmation that X intended to provide options for “adult sensitive” material. Although X currently allows users to post explicit content and nudity, several areas of the app, such as profile pictures and cover pictures for communities, prohibit such content.
Twitter experimented with a similar feature in 2021
It is interesting to note that Elon Musk was not involved with the company prior to the launch of Communities. In 2021, Twitter experimented with a similar idea to make its site a more personal place for conversations. Twitter stands out for allowing pornographic content, but has not publicly considered adding NSFW features to communities.
Furthermore, Twitter has been rumored to be considering creating a competitor to OnlyFans through its creator membership service in 2022. The newsletter mentions concerns over increasing illegal child exploitation content causing the concept to be abandoned.
It is not clear what X’s leadership is at this point on these issues. Chung reiterated in another article that the new filters aim to automatically remove adult content to improve community safety. Chung said that only those who declare their age can visit NSFW content in the Communities.
