How artificial intelligence summaries will affect user perception remains to be seen
Abstract
- Google is expanding AI features to the Google Play Store with AI-generated app summaries in the latest update.
- AI technology is already being used for app FAQs and will soon provide details on specific app features.
- Google’s efforts to make artificial intelligence inevitable in everyday tasks could lead to increased reliance on the technology.
Google has generated a lot of hype lately for Gemini, its biggest AI-based initiative to date. However, its AI focus has expanded beyond Gemini, with more generative AI features being integrated into its products and services. One area where you might notice such changes – especially if you’re using an Android device – is the Google Play Store. Now the company is going official with its AI-generated app summaries.
What to expect at Google I/O 2024
Last year’s I/O was all about artificial intelligence, and we expect Google to double down on it this year
As stated in Google’s March 2024 system release notes, the Play Store will now feature AI-generated apps (via GApps Flags & Leaks on Telegram). On the app’s store page, you’ll see a notice explaining the summary details generated by Google AI. If you choose to click before downloading the app, you’ll see information about its features before adding it to your device.
Announcement of artificial intelligence in the Google Play Store
This isn’t the first time Google has been seen integrating AI into the Play Store. Earlier this year, server-side changes suggested that an App Highlights feature was in the works. At the time, it appeared that Google was still testing the AI-generated segment of the Play Store among a select group of people.
Google has already started using AI to improve the FAQ section of app pages in the Play Store. Inside the FAQ, you’ll find information about key aspects of the app and an overview of why it’s popular. Google also seems to be working on implementing AI to provide details on certain features of the apps you can download. The introduction of AI-generated summaries is just another sign of what could be in store.
The Google Play Store is a dumpster fire and AI won’t save it
Adding AI recommendations to the Play Store won’t fix the way Google prioritizes its whims over user satisfaction
Whether or not you’ve started using AI features in other areas of your life, Google is working hard to make it inevitable. There is no hard and fast rule that says you should start using AI tools, for example. However, companies like Google continue to make this technology more useful for everyday tasks. As you use their apps and services, it may only be a matter of time before you rely on AI more than you ever imagined.
