Over the past few years, Samsung has increased its promises of security and Android updates for devices. The Galaxy Note 10 Lite and S10 Lite have fulfilled that promise and will no longer receive updates.
Samsung’s latest flagship, the Galaxy S24 series, comes with a seven-year warranty on Android and security updates. This means that from the day of release, the device will go through a total of seven generations of Android, theoretically ending on Android 21.
When the Galaxy Note 10 Lite and S10 Lite were announced, Samsung was still in its infancy when it came to its promised Android update policy. Both devices were originally promised three years of Android updates and four years of security updates.
According to Samsung’s update schedule, the Galaxy Note 10 Lite and S10 Lite are at the end of that road, marking the last model variants of the Note 10 and S10 line to receive updates, either security or OS.
For the user, this means that it may be time to find another device that is currently receiving security updates in the near future. Security updates are important and address vulnerabilities that appear regularly. Malicious threats are common, and it’s important to have a device that’s up-to-date to ensure your personal information is as safe as it can be.
Being at the end of a 3-year OS update warranty is strange now, since Samsung has normalized offering 5+ years of updates with every new phone that comes out, including mid-range and low-end devices. This recent shift prioritizes being able to continue using your device over the years, and makes OEMs responsible for maintaining their promised update schedule.
Unfortunately, the Note 10 Lite and S10 Lite were released at the lower end of that final bump in update priority.
