Anthropic, an AI company created by some of the original founders of OpenAI, has announced the latest generation of its family of AI models, Claude.
Claude 3 includes three AI models that differ in terms of capabilities, performance and price. From the smallest to the largest, these include haiku, sonnet and opus.
Haiku is the smallest and fastest model, which gives results almost instantly. Potential uses include user interactions, content moderation, and logistics optimization.
The Sonnet is a mid-range model that offers a balance between intelligence and speed. It can be useful in processing data, making product recommendations, and generating code.
Opus is the most intelligent model and can accept open-ended queries and unusual scenarios and display a human-like understanding of them. Possible use cases include automating tasks, generating hypotheses in research, and advanced analysis of charts and graphs.
Its internal benchmarks show that the strongest model, the Opus, outperforms the GPT-4 and the Gemini 1.0 Ultra in all the categories it’s tested for. The other two models were equal for most categories, in some cases they had better and in others worse results.
According to Anthropic, the Claude 3 models have advanced vision capabilities and can process various visual components, such as images, charts, graphs and technical diagrams. The company believes this makes the models particularly useful for business users who typically have PDFs, flowcharts and presentation slides within their knowledge bases.
This model family also rejects requests less often than previous generations. “Claude 3 models demonstrate a more nuanced understanding of requirements, recognize real harm, and refuse to respond to innocuous inquiries much less often,” Anthropic wrote.
All three models will offer a context window of 200K, but the company says the models are actually capable of accepting inputs of over 1 million tokens.
Opus and Sonet are available now, and Haiku is expected to be available soon. Sonnet is available through Amazon Bedrock and as a preview in Google Cloud’s Vertex AI Model Garden, and the other two models will also be available there soon.
