The desire for a simple charging experience is driving the demand for public infrastructure
TORONTO, February 29, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — ChargeLab (www.chargelab.co), software power supply North America Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Infrastructure, has released the results of its new report, “Industry Survey: 500 EV Drivers on Public Charging.” In the survey, 500 drivers of electric vehicles were questioned United States, revealing a key finding: while 86.0% of EV drivers now have access to a home charger, 59.6% still use public chargers weekly. This finding highlights the need for continued investment in public charging infrastructure.
The research also sheds light on the factors that influence driver satisfaction at public charging stations. These factors, in order of importance, include:
- Speed up: Electric vehicle drivers are prioritizing faster charging, highlighting the need for efficient DC fast chargers. Software that remotely monitors chargers can also increase overall speed and reliability.
- Payment convenience: Flexibility in payment options, including mobile payments, is key. Discounts on off-peak billing or other tailored pricing schemes can also drive customer loyalty.
- Accessibility and location: Maps apps are the primary tool for locating EV chargers. Software that supports the Open Charge Point Interface (OCPI) is key to improving EV roaming.
- Cleanliness and maintenance: Drivers expect filling stations to be clean and well maintained. Customer feedback via dedicated support lines or apps contributes to station maintenance.
- Brand reputation: Knowledge of brand logos influences the choices of electric vehicle drivers. White label charging stations that match well-known brands can attract more customers.
- User interface and ease of use: Drivers prefer an intuitive interface for a simple and efficient charging process. Smart software can enhance the customer journey, making it accessible and easy to use.
Another interesting angle illuminated by the research is drivers’ willingness to share data to improve the EV charging experience. Most are open to sharing session and vehicle data, suggesting there is significant consumer interest in properly charging electric vehicles. Only 3.4% expressed reluctance to share data.
“There’s no shortage of news about public billing problems—but what makes us excited about this survey is that it reframes the problem as an opportunity,” he says. Zak Lefevre, CEO of ChargeLab. “These EV drivers echo the same stories we hear from our customers. Everyone is happy if you can make the charging experience fast, easy and affordable.”
